This piece was originally intended to be a poster for the Wizard World in Chicago/2005.
When I design posters for conventions that I attend, the subject material usually reflects on the guests/events that pertain to that particular convention. In this case, the guests of honor were writer/artist Frank Miller ,and artist Jim Lee, who were promoting their first ever collaboration on the re-telling of Robin "the Boy Wonder's" origin.
Unfortunately, I did not finish the piece in time to color and print it for the con, also the original art was way too big in size, an annoying tendency of mine that I am slowly learning to control. But they say every cloud has a silver lining , even though I was unable to finish the piece I took it up to Chicago with me anyway to display on my table and within a half an hour someone had made an offer to buy it for a surprising amount.
The most difficult part of the picture was, of course , the bike , which was something I had never attempted before, All I used as reference was a small illustrated handbook on the history of the American motorcycle, And even more tricky was the sidecar and it's connecting assembly with the rest of the bike.
You rarely see the Caped Crusader on a motorcycle nowadays, so I took it up as a personal challenge to depict this scene with some believability.
Most artists nowadays would probably have had Batman on a more "sporty" bike, but I'm a sucker for "hogs" so I put him on a Harley.
In the end, looking back on it, I just wasn't satisfied with the end product. I plan to do a similar illustration in the future, but at a more dramatic angle..... STAY TUNED
