"CLEANING HOUSE"
(2009)
This was a commission piece for a
comics company called Scare Tactix Graphix, a small indie press
company based out of New York.
The subject is "Billy the Monster Hunter", one of the
books produced by Scare Tactix Graphix. The main character and
concept was created by Ramsey Rusef, who also wrote the stories
for the books. I provided the pencils for the series (and this
piece) while series colorist E. "Vince" Vinson provided the colorwork.
I wanted to
depict an image that would convey what the book and the main
character were all about... namely hunting "monsters";
In this case, a small band of rambunctious Satyrs who were
wreaking havoc in Billy's house.
Since the series is based in
fantasy, I gave it a more stylized, animated look. I went a little
more loose with the pencil than my usual, more detailed work. I
added a doorway to the picture to indicate a "gateway"
between two worlds; Billy's more normal idealistic existence
and the chaotic dark realm that is the monster's universe.
Billy is fighting the Satyrs with some help from some of his
"toy" friends which he can magically bring to life for
short periods of time. If you look closely, you'll see a couple
of superhero types, based loosely on "Superman" and
"Iron-Man". I also added some average little boy
artifacts like spaceships, planes and some stuffed animals.
The
numbers on the monsters were an idea I had for the
story behind the picture... something I called; "the
Night of the 60 Satyrs".
This commission can currently be purchases as a Poster or T-Shirt.
