Frustrated Artist

"Frustrated Artist" (1999)

This was just an exercise that I was going through with Disney characters while I was employed at the parks (1996-2001).

The illustration was an attempt to put together a business card for myself, or possibly a desk shingle. At the Disney parks, located in some of the stores most notably the "Art of Disney" locations, an artist is usually on duty to do custom illustrations of Disney characters. These illustrations are later used in merchandising products that guests can order and purchase; products ranging from original framed art to custom timepieces.

At one point during my tenure at the "House of Mouse" I was contemplating trying out for the position as one of these artists, but ultimately had a change of heart.

Of all the Disney characters Donald Duck was and still remains my favorite. In my opinion he is the most "Human" and flawed of Disney's animal creations.

During my stay with Disney I had the honor of meeting the late Carl Barks, who created Scrooge McDuck, Daisy, Huey, Louie, and Dewey among many others and single handedly expanded the character of Donald Duck into a universe in and of itself. When I heard that the company was planning a sequel to the Disney classic "FANTASIA" I was concerned but once it was released in 1999 I was pleasantly surprised to see Donald and his family in the "Pomp & Circumstance" segment of the film as Noah preparing for the great flood.

I used a Blue drafting pencil to render the sketch for a change, I usually don't use colored pencils when I do roughs on my pieces as it tends to break my concentration on the work. I portrayed Donald in his usual state....."perturbed"!!!
