"MADMAN" (2001)

I have been a longtime fan of "MADMAN" and of his creator, artist/writer Mike Allred. I created this piece for no particular reason except to just render the character for the first time.

MADMAN is really a rather confused cat by the name of Frank Einstein, who resides in the sleepy little burg called Snap City. One day Frank had a rather unfortunate encounter with an automobile...a lethal one! A pair of crazy mad scientists patched him all up and brought him back to life ala Dr. Frankenstein, but in the process instilling in him extraordinary powers. One of the unfortunate side effects from the accident and operation tis that he has no memory of his former life.

MADMAN made his first appearance in the pages of a small independent mag called "Creatures from the Id" back in 1990, and since, has made countless appearances in various magazines and even in his own comic - "MADMAN Adventures".

This was the first time that I ever rendered Allred's character and I wanted to do a little something different, and with this unusual character to work with the sky was the limit. The hardest part of the drawing was the brain of course. what?, a brain in the picture? Look closely and you'll notice that Frank is sitting on a huge brain, it's upside down. Getting the "noodles" of the brain right were the hardest part, and I studied quite a few reference pics of brains before I was satisfied.

The structure and layout of this drawing is actually borrowed from an old Roger Rabbit/Jessica poster that I did way back in 1988.

The girl behind MADMAN is the love of his life Jo. And behind Frank you'll see pictures of his friends including Dr. Flem, who was instrumental in resurrecting Frank into MADMAN. Also, if you look closely you'll also spot SUPERMAN and NEXUS with whom he shared adventures with in past company crossovers.
