This was a commission piece that I did for a client for MegaCon/2004 in Orlando, Florida.

I was familiar with SHAZAM! and Captain Marvel, mostly from the 70s tv show. I have also been a fan of both KURT SCHAFFENBERGER and MARC SWAYZE's art on the Marvel books, but I was not too familiar with the character of Mary Marvel, so I had to do a little research on her.

Her uniform is basically a more feminine interpretation of the Captain Marvel uniform. Over the years the outfit has changed slightly, but has kept the basic appearance intact.

Marc Swayze, in my opinion, illustrated the character best; depicting her as a little girl - an innocent that possesses great power. I tried my best to capture that innocence, but at the same time depict a more mature version of the character.

Illustrating a subject in flight, whether it be a bird or in this case the unnatural subject of a flying girl, is one of the most difficult to create and depict in a realistic, believable manner.

I have received a lot of positive feedback for this piece even though it was the first time that I had drawn the character.
