SPIDER-MAN/HELLBOY (2004)

I got the idea for this piece while working as a projectionist at a local Orlando theatre. The "HELLBOY" film was already out in release, and the anticipation for the "SPIDER-MAN" sequel was beginning to hit a fever pitch. I thought it would be interesting to put these two very different characters together, plus I had never drawn "HELLBOY" before so I saw it as a challenge to tackle a new character.

I tried to incorporate some of Mike Mignola's elements into the look of HELLBOY while keeping it as a true interpretation of my own personal style. His little pet gargoyle was a last minute addition to the piece.

SPIDER-MAN has been a favorite of mine since childhood when I watched the late 60's cartoons by Ralph Bakshi. In my opinion there is only one truly great SPIDEY artist and that's the great John Romita Sr. So whenever I do an illustration of the webbed wonder, I try to have my art reflect a little of his style.

If you look closely at some of the details, you'll see some of the religious paraphernalia that HELLBOY wears when he goes into battle. And in the background, behind the characters, you'll notice the eerie tentacles of some nameless creature and the all too familiar mechanical arms of "Dr. Octopus",Spider-Man's foe in "SPIDER-MAN 2"
