![]() About the Artist:
I was born and raised in the wild untamed mountains of Northern Washington State by a small loving clan of gentle Sasquatch, where I quickly learned the primal laws of nature...
No. Sorry. Unfortunately my life is not as spectacular as I would like to imagine, but hey one can dream can't one?
My name is Shawn Surface and although I was actually born in the great state of Washington, I was by no stretch of the imagination abducted and raised by "Bigfoot."
I was born on September 3, 1964, in the town of Lynwood, which is located in Snohomish County, (that's just about 40 miles north of Seattle). My parents are Robert and Shirley, and I have three brothers;(Wayne, Paul, and Robert, Jr.).
My father who was a career Army man saw action in Vietnam during the war but luckily returned unscathed. My Mom was the classic loving mother and housewife who, although suffering from Epilepsy all her life, nonetheless raised her children and kept the homefires burning. My parents were both very supportive of my talents at a very early age.
I have been drawing ever since I could walk, but only in the past ten years have I seriously devoted my talents to a career in art, so I'm what you would call the classic "late bloomer". I chose the underappreciated art form of comics or "pop art" to which to concentrate my talents. My first professional comics job and first published work was with Bill Black's AC Comics in the pages of Femforce magazine starting with issue #113 and #114. I also did a special one shot issue of "Nightveil" which featured my first cover work. Since 2002 I have been traveling the convention circuit, specifically the East coastal US, and to my pleasant surprise, although I am relatively unknown, my work has been a hit with fans of the medium ever since.
I guess the best way to describe my comic art style is;"neo-retro". I am a sucker for detailed work and accuracy and I try to o reflect these factors in my work. I was raised admiring the works of; John Buscema, John Romita Sr., Gil Kane, Curt Swan, Neal Adams, Gray Morrow, Nick Cardy, Marty Nodell, Jack Kirby Kurt Schaffenberge , Marc Swayze and later on with more contemporary artists like; John Byrne, Moebius, Steve Rude, Jose' Garcia, Lopez , George Perez,
Jerry Ordway and Brian Bolland, all of whom are key influences.
I am primarily self taught and have had no formal art training. Most of what I have learned was from the countless art and drafting books I have studied and of course; PRACTICE-PRACTICE-PRACTICE!!!
Currently I am working on independent titles but hope to someday do some work for DC or perhaps some other big company in the future. I am also developing some personal projects which I hope to release to the public in the near future. Other than my comics work I also do logo and character design, and custom commissions for private clients....I currently call Orlando, Florida my home. |
