"Playing God" (2005)

This was a nightmare in the making...Damn group shots!

Here we have an alternate cover illustration for the debut issue of Robert Wawrizyniak's science fiction epic; "SUPER-7". The 12 issue maxi series written by Robert, pencilled by yours truly, and inked and colored by artist Scott Shoemaker begins with an introduction to the antagonists of the story. A roving army of murderous marauders, led by the diabolical General Reen.

While preparing this cover, I found an all new sense of respect for George Perez (JLA/Avengers, Teen Titans), a master of group shots along with artist Jose, Luis', Garcia, Lopez (Twilight, Atari Force).

Even though it's a dead on forward shot, there are still quite a bit of subjects in the piece. The easy part was the frontmost row of characters with the center dominated by the General himself.

Reen is flanked by a menagerie of his murderous minions that come in all shapes and sizes of alien life. I was hoping to give the effect of a seemingly endless army of monsters. The circular design behind Reen features the ever watching eyes of the books supreme source of evil; the dreaded Overlord. The schematic in front of Reen's entourage is of a prehistoric Earth which plays a pivotal role in the first issue of the series.

This was only a taste of what was to come with my collaboration with Robert Wawrizyniak, for throughout the series there are numerous situations which required vast group shots and well populated battle scenes. To properly covey the scope and granduer, many of these shots demanded double page spreads to accomodate the artwork.

The premiere issue of the "SUPER-7" will make it's debut in the Spring of 2007. You can find out more about this series by clicking HERE!
